Lunch in Innsbruck runs on a tight clock. The kitchens open around half eleven, the good tables are gone by half twelve, and at a lot of places the lunch service is over by two. You get one hour, and where you spend it decides how the rest of your day goes.

These are the ten worth walking to. Some are nine euros and eaten in twenty minutes. Some deserve the full hour and a proper sit down. All of them are better than whatever you were going to grab on the way back to the office.

ARABISK

The Best Hummus in the City

Nearly fifteen hundred reviews and still holding a 4.8, which in this city is close to unheard of. The hummus and baba ganoush are the reason, the grilled meats are the follow-up, and the cardamom coffee at the end is the part people forget to mention.

The lunch window is narrow and it books out. Wednesday to Friday, eleven until two, and then it shuts until the evening. Reserve, or come right at opening.

UNA PIZZA

Neapolitan Dough, Done Properly

The dough is the whole argument here: pillowy at the edge, never heavy, the kind that makes you understand why people get boring about Neapolitan pizza. Any vegetarian pizza can be made vegan with a cheese swap.

It sits just off the tourist track near the university, which means the room is loud, tight and full of people who live here. Lunch runs from half eleven to half two, every day of the week.

GREEN TASTE

The Lunch Menu That Actually Fills You Up

Small room on the Innrain, entirely plant-based, and the lunch menu comes with a salad and a drink for a price that makes you check the receipt twice. Portions are generous enough that finishing is a genuine question.

It is a weekday operation only, closed Saturday and Sunday, and it shuts at four. This is a working lunch, not a weekend plan.

FRANZS

Beisl Food and a Beer on the Square

Schnitzel, beef goulash cooked with beer, Schlutzkrapfen, smoked trout, and an Innsbruck lager brewed for the house. The menu is short and everything on it is the thing it says it is.

The tables outside look straight onto the Marktplatz, which turns a lunch break into forty-five minutes of very good people watching. Open every day, including Sunday, from half eleven.

HAO WEI DAO

Chinese Food Without the Compromise

This is the one to send people to when they say there is no good Chinese food in Innsbruck. Xiao long bao, crispy duck with skin that actually cracks, hand-pulled noodles, century egg with tofu, mouth-watering chicken. The menu reads like it was written for people who already know what they want.

Modern room, fast service, right on Leopoldstraße. Check the current opening times before you walk over, because they are not reliably listed online.

WEISSES RÖSSL

The Old Town Classic

Tucked into Kiebachgasse in the middle of the Altstadt, and the place locals send visitors when the visitors want the real thing. Schnitzel, apple strudel, and a Kaiserschmarrn with a genuine reputation.

You can eat in the restaurant or at the bar, and the bar is the better call for a lunch on your own. Portions are large enough that nobody leaves hungry and prices sit at the higher end for the old town.

VIET SPICE

Pho, and an Owner Who Explains It

A 4.9 rating, and reading the reviews you understand why: half of them are about the food and half are about the man behind the counter, who explains how each dish is meant to be eaten and brings you ginger tea while you wait.

The pho comes in two sizes, the summer rolls are properly fresh, and the lunch plate of rice with lemongrass chicken is the order to build a habit around.

MUNDVOLL

Half Salad, Half Curry, Under Ten Euros

Same address as Viet Spice, so when one is packed you have not wasted the walk. The move here is the half-and-half bowl: half salad, half curry with rice, two toppings and a sauce, for under ten euros. The red curry with chicken is the one.

There is a small garden at the back that almost nobody knows about. Two practical notes: card only, no cash, and it closes at the weekend.

PIZZERIA A CASA

Under the Viaduct, Open Every Day

One of the Viaduktbögen institutions, thin-crust rather than Neapolitan, and reliably busy at weekends. The capricciosa with artichoke is the one regulars order without looking at the menu.

Easy to reach by tram or on foot, prices are fair, and it is open seven days a week from half eleven. When your Sunday needs feeding, this is on the short list.

DENGG CAFE BISTRO

When Lunch Turns Into Cake

A bistro with a patisserie counter attached, which is a dangerous combination and entirely the point. Soup and something warm at midday, then Sachertorte or Kaiserschmarrn afterwards because it is right there and you are already sitting down.

Riesengasse is a quiet lane in the old town, dogs are welcome, and it opens on Sundays too, which is rare around here.

HOW TO PLAN YOUR LUNCH HOUR

When you have twenty minutes: Mundvoll or Viet Spice on Anichstraße, or Green Taste on the Innrain. When you have a full hour and someone to talk to: Arabisk, Una Pizza or Weisses Rössl. When it is Sunday and half the city is shut: Franzs, Pizzeria A Casa, Una Pizza and Dengg.

One thing worth internalising if you are new here. Austrian lunch service is short. At several of these the kitchen stops around two and does not reopen until evening, so eleven forty-five is a much safer bet than one fifteen.
